About
Now - April 2023
Kia Ora! My name is Dave.
I'm an engineering manager, developer, technologist, and writer. I'm passionate about privacy-first software development.
Who/What/Where?
I’m David Wood, I live in Te Whanganui-a-tara, New Zealand with my wife, our two children, and our cats Monty and Stevie. We emigrated here from the UK in 2017.
I like to help people find their way in tech. I mentor people looking to get into the industry, and particularly like to look after those going into iOS and Swift development. The more the merrier!
Day to day
I work full time for an awesome company where I support and manage fantastic teams of mobile engineers. They keep me very busy, and I love it.
In my spare time I work on my indie iOS apps, record my podcast Waiting For Review , build Lego and spend time with my family. I photograph interesting things when I go for walks.
Podcast
I record a podcast Waiting For Review .
Daniel Jilg of TelemetryDeck fame has been my cohost on the shows since Jan ‘22. I love catching up with him every couple of weeks.
iOS indie projects
I love making apps for Mastodon/Fediverse, and apps that do creative things with video.
Indie projects that I’m proud of include:
- GoVJ , a realtime video mixing app
- Topiary, an app for managing who you follow on Mastodon/Fediverse
- Video to Audio , a utility for extracting audio files from videos.
I decided these side projects were not quite enough, so I’m also working on:
- TootSDK ,an SDK for Swift to support Mastodon/Fediverse based client apps.
- Video streaming apps.
- A photo and video client for the Fediverse.
Writing
I have a collection of short stories, on Smashwords: 100 words
